Tuesdays and Thursdays: open from 10am - 4pm, appointments suggested, walk-ins welcome

Mondays and Wednesdays: open via appointment only 10am - 4pm, appointments required

Fridays: closed, except upon special request via email to nbl@aip.org

Transportation Information

If coming by Metro, please be aware that there is construction along River Road. There is still pedestrian access to our building but it is sometimes redirected. Visitors may also use the University of Maryland 104 Shuttle Bus

Additional Visiting Information

Note: there are no options for purchasing food in the building, nor are there walkable options nearby. Food delivery services delivery to the building and there are public transportation options to get to restaurants and grocery stores. There are tables, chairs, microwaves, water and ice, and coffee/tea inside the building, as well as outdoor seating. Local dining options outlined here. Please plan accordingly.

2. Before your in-person appointment, please fill out our researcher registration form

3. If known, fill out item request form before visit. Limit to up to 3 collections before visit.

Appointments are open to the general public. Priority will be given to patrons intending to use our research materials.

Appointments must be made at least 7 days in advance. Please indicate planned arrival and departure times if they differ from our standard hours of 10am-4pm

Updated Reading Room Policies

Mask are encouraged but not required. We can provide a mask if you don't have one. 

No eating or drinking within the reading room, though you can bring food and drink and consume it in the building's cafeteria on the ground floor.

Request items before or during a visit through the item request form (before a visit please limit to 3 collections maximum, more collections can be requested on-site)

Rules for research

  • Items that can be taken to researcher desks include (may be stored at reference desk):
    • Laptops, cameras, tablets, phones, etc.
    • Notebooks
    • Folders
    • Paper
    • Pencils
  • Items that CANNOT be taken:
    • Food
    • Drinks (even closed water bottles)
    • Pens
    • Bags

Virtual Reading Room

New at NBLA!

Our virtual reading room service allows you to view archival materials and rare books remotely via a mediated document camera. Researchers meet one-on-one with a member of library staff, who share the requested materials though a high-resolution document camera. The free, one-hour appointment takes place online via Zoom. Appointments are available from 10am-4pm (EST) Monday-Thursday and must be made at least 3 days in advance.
